What is Microsphere

A microsphere/cenosphere is a lightweight, hollow sphere with a diameter in the range 20–500 μm made largely of silica and alumina, typically produced as a coal combustion byproduct at thermal power plants. It is filled with inert gas (mostly CO2, N2, O2). The color of cenosphere varies from gray to almost white and their density is about 0.4–0.8 g/cm3.

Because of their low density, small size, spherical shape, high melting temperature, mechanical strength, chemical inertia, insulating properties, and low porosity, microspheres find a wide range of applications in industry.

Cenospheres as an additive in industrial materials can increase:

-sound and heat insulation

-thermal storage stability and capacity

-compressive strength

Cenospheres as an additive in industrial materials can reduce:

-density

-porosity

-permeability

-stress concentration
